Studio In The Elementary School
During my last two weeks in Marfa, I did and internship at S.I.T.E.S. This is an incredible program that puts professional artists in the Marfa elementary school to ensure that every student receives art education. The Marfa School District cut art programming from their budget several years ago. S.I.T.E.S. stepped in and now students are exposed to painting, drawing, film and video, architecture, printmaking, and pottery. Each student gets at least one hour of art a week and they can elect to take absolutely free art classes after school. During my internship, I taught bookmaking to grades 1-6. It was an incredibly fun and enriching experience and I hope to visit again.
The program is at no cost to the students or the families, but it is expensive to run. Take a look at the Marfa Studio Arts website, and donate if you are able. Or stop by Marfa Studio Arts (located on Highway 90 between The Pizza Foundation and Ballroom) and purchase a pack of Christmas cards designed by Marfa Elementary School students!
